Generalized inverse eigenvalue problems for symmetric arrow-head matrices

In this paper, we first give the representation of the general solution of the following inverse eigenvalue problem (IEP): Given X ∈ Rn×p and a diagonal matrix Λ ∈ Rp×p, find nontrivial real-valued symmetric arrow-head matrices A and B such that AXΛ = BX. We then consider an optimal approximation problem: Given real-valued symmetric arrow-head matrices Ã, B̃ ∈ Rn×n, find (Â, B̂) ∈ SE such that ‖Â...

Inverse spectral problems for Sturm-Liouville operators with transmission conditions

Abstract: This paper deals with the boundary value problem involving the differential equation                      -y''+q(x)y=lambda y                                 subject to the standard boundary conditions along with the following discontinuity conditions at a point              y(a+0)=a1y(a-0),    y'(a+0)=a2y'(a-0)+a3y(a-0).  We develop the Hochestadt-Lieberman’s result for Sturm-Lio...

Inexact Inverse Iteration for Symmetric Matrices

In this paper we analyse inexact inverse iteration for the real symmetric eigenvalue problem Av = λv. Our analysis is designed to apply to the case when A is large and sparse and where iterative methods are used to solve the shifted linear systems (A − σI)y = x which arise. We rst present a general convergence theory that is independent of the nature of the inexact solver used. Next we consider...

Structured QR algorithms for Hamiltonian symmetric matrices

Efficient, backward-stable, doubly structure-preserving algorithms for the Hamiltonian symmetric and skew-symmetric eigenvalue problems are developed. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical properties of the algorithms. Also developed are doubly structure-preserving Lanczos processes for Hamiltonian symmetric and skew-symmetric matrices.

Structured Inverse Eigenvalue Problems

An inverse eigenvalue problem concerns the reconstruction of a structured matrix from prescribed spectral data. Such an inverse problem arises in many applications where parameters of a certain physical system are to be determined from the knowledge or expectation of its dynamical behavior. Spectral information is entailed because the dynamical behavior often is governed by the underlying natur...
